It is very important to your oral hygiene that you take care of your toothbrush. It is the main tool with which you clean your mouth, and if it is not properly taken care of, it will be very difficult for it to clean your mouth properly.

First, make sure you are replacing your toothbrush 3-4 times a year, about every 3-4 months. Brush bristles are less effective as they get older. Even if it looks “fine,” it should be replaced, because bacteria can grow on your toothbrush head.

After you use your new toothbrush, rinse it off completely, getting rid of extra toothpaste, food particles, and other debris that could be left on the brush. Store the brush in an upright position to allow the water to drain off and the brush to dry. Store in a well-ventilated space. If you must store it temporarily in a closed off space (say, a zip-top bag for travelling purposes) be sure to air it out as much as possible. This helps prevent rapid bacterial growth on your toothbrush.

Store your brush away from other toothbrushes to prevent cross-contamination.
