You’re probably aware of all the dental products that claim to eliminate plaque buildup, or simply remove plaque from your teeth. But do you know what plaque is, or why you’d want to prevent its buildup?

Excessive plaque buildup is one of the most common problems Dr. Nina Nattiv and the team here at Polished Dental in Beverly Hills, California sees in our patients. In order to help you have the healthiest smile possible, we want to talk to you about plaque buildup. Specifically, we want to help you learn how to avoid it, and why you should do so in the first place.

What is plaque?
Plaque is the initial buildup of gunk on your teeth. When you wake up in the morning, or right before bed at night, it’s that layer of rough-feeling residue on your teeth. There’s no way to stop plaque buildup, which is why you have to brush and floss consistently.

What does it do?
Plaque, if left alone, will turn into a hardened shell of mineral deposit called tartar. That’s when you start to have some problems because tartar can cause inflammation of your gums – otherwise known as gingivitis.

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, and that’s a very serious health issue. You shouldn’t let your plaque build to that point. Please note that tartar is impossible to remove on your own.

Avoiding plaque buildup will do wonders for your oral health. Not only does it keep your teeth clean, but it helps keep your breath fresh as well.
