You’ve likely heard of gum disease, which is also known as periodontal disease, an oral infection that attacks the gums and bone that support your teeth. Did you know that some people are more at risk for gum disease than others? Dr. Nattiv and our team are happy to share the risk factors with you.

Risks for Gum Disease
Bacteria and plaque are the main causes of gum disease. However, other factors, including the ones below, can heighten your risk for gum disease or make gum disease worse.

– Pregnancy – Hormone changes, increased blood supply, acid reflux, and difficulty brushing and flossing due to nausea can all increase your risk for gum disease. In addition, gum disease can increase your chances of going into labor prematurely.
– Misaligned or crowded teeth – Having crooked or crowded teeth makes it difficult to properly brush and floss. Because of this, plaque, which can cause gum disease, can be missed in the mouth. Having orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth can give you a better chance of preventing gum disease.- Braces or Dental Bridge – It can be difficult to brush and floss

– Braces or Dental Bridge – It can be difficult to brush and floss sufficiently if you are wearing braces of a dental bridge. Ask us how to properly brush and floss while wearing these appliances. We can show you how to thread floss and to clean your bridge properly.
