Brushing your teeth is a no-brainer, right? After all, it is not a very complicated process and one that you do every day. Well, it’s one that you should be doing every day. But mornings can be hectic, and let’s face it, after a long day at work or school; you may just want to veg in front of the television or with your device before drifting off to sleep. Brushing may seem like a chore or something that can wait until later, but it is the foundation for keeping your mouth clean and healthy. It is your first step in removing the food debris, plaque and tartar that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. So you need to take it seriously and be diligent about doing it. And you need to do it right.

First, you need the right toothbrush. You can talk to our dentist, Dr. Nina Nattiv about what kind of toothbrush is right for you, however in most cases a toothbrush with soft bristles and a toothpaste containing fluoride will do fine. Make sure that that the bristles are not worn or flattened, and if they are, it is time for a new toothbrush.

You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. If you want to brush after your meals, wait for about thirty minutes to allow your saliva time to rinse away and neutralize the acids left over from your meals. Give yourself enough time to brush. You need to spend at least one minute on each row of your teeth. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth. Brush your top teeth followed by your bottom teeth, making sure to clean the chewing and biting surfaces of your teeth. When it is time to clean the insides of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush vertically and brush in short, up and down strokes. Don’t forget to clean the top and sides of your tongue and to brush along your gum line. Proper brushing, along with regular visits with Dr. Nattiv can help make sure that your mouth stays in great shape.
